Fetching the Light

Project 2 marks a new chapter in Fjölheim’s story. In March 2026, we hosted a gathering in Berlin celebrating light. Under the name Fetching the Light, the event explored how people experience light across the world.

In Scandinavia, where winter darkness can stretch for hours, people build rituals around light — candles in every window, layered lamps, and the intimacy of hygge in cities like Copenhagen. In Brazil and Italy, sunlight floods daily life — homes open outward, space expands, and light feels abundant, almost taken for granted. In Japan, as described in In Praise of Shadows, light is softened and filtered — beauty lives in shadow, not brightness.

We asked attendees: Growing up where you did, how was light treated in your household? And now, living in Berlin, what does light mean to you? Their reflections, gathered here, reveal the deeply personal ways light shapes our lives.

This project embodies warmth and brings together the core elements of Fjölheim’s philosophy — honesty, reflection, and slightly rugged craftsmanship — all held together by wood. It’s a tangible exploration of how light connects people, space, and design.
